The Pen Tool, be it in Photoshop or Illustrator, is dreaded by some. It may take a few hours of practice to get it to work like you want to, but once you mastered it, it can become your best friend.

However, even at that point, there are still some ways to make it work better for you. One of which is to enable the 'Rubber Band' option in the top toolbar when you have the Pen Tool selected. In order to see it, you have to right-click the gear icon about midway and tick the checkbox that just appeared.

This will let you have a preview of the path that the tool is going to take even before you put an anchor point down. It is ├╝ber-useful while tracing because it takes out the guess work and speeds up your workflow. Also, it helps you learn exactly how the Pen Tool behaves and makes you even more used to it.
