I recently came across a YouTube video of a Phlearn tutorial on how to colorize an illustration in Photoshop. Phlearn is a company dedicated to making Photoshop tutorials. They have tons of free clips on their active YouTube channel as well as a large selection of longer, more detailed paid tutorials. They also do photography tutorials.
Now, their new tutorial is where they show techniques to colourize an illustration. What I like is that they use a bunch of really useful basic tools in Photoshop. We get to see how layers masks can help you, tell you how much highlights and shadows can change an image, etc... I suggest you watch it, it's good.
